Author Spotlight: Joanne Wadsworth

Welcome to the Author Spotlight, Joanne Wadsworth

Nicknames: Jo. Yeah, that’s short and sweet.

Where do you live: New Zealand. And just an hour from where The Hobbit movie’s village is located.

Your favorite dessert: Death by Chocolate–and I have not expired yet.

Your favorite TV series: The Vampire Diaries.

Last book you read: Gossamer by Renita Pizzitola

Last movie you watched: Breaking Dawn Part Two. It was fabulous.

Last song (or album) you bought: Red by Taylor Swift.

A book/series you could read over and over again: Oh yeah, anything by Nalini Singh. I love her Guild Hunter and Psy-Changeling series. Plus, she’s a New Zealand author. Gotta love that.

Coke or pepsi? Coke.

Day or night? Day.

Pen or pencil? Pen.

Summer or winter? Summer. New Zealand has the best summers ever.

Cat or dog? Dog. My puppy would tear my leg off if I said cat.

Tea or coffee? Can I have a hot chocolate?

Plotter or pantser? I’m a little of both. I plot, then my young adult characters take over as I’m writing their story. They’re young, and have a mind of their own, so I just go with it.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer? In February 2009. Young adult books like Twilight were taking off, and this genre just clicked into place for me. I sat down back then and drew up a massive cast of heroes and heroines and edgy villains. Now I’m matching them all up and having a ton of fun with my YA fantasy romance series.

What are you working on now? Three projects at once. Book two in my YA series titled WARRIOR is going through content edits with Lyrical Press, NY–I have a release date of 4th November 2013 for this. I’ve also submitted a romantic suspense and all fingers and toes are crossed as I wait to hear back. While I do, I’ve begun book three in the YA series titled ENCHANTER. It’s all go for 2013–Book one PROTECTOR has just released. I’m loving it.

If you decided not to be a writer, what would your other dream job be? Why? A hot pool tester. Yeah, I’m not sure this is even a job? But I love relaxing in a hot pool, so I’d definitely be the girl to call to test them out. J Okay, you did say a dream job!

What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done in your life? Going through labor. It was my proudest/most-painful moment, too. Of course then I forgot how scary it was, and tackled it three more times.

Who is the one person that has singlehandedly inspired you the most in your life? My mother. She’s compassionate, caring and never says no to anyone. I’ve heard it said a child’s greatest role model is their mother. That’s very true for me.

What is one talent that you’re hopeless at, but you wish you had? Snorkeling. I love swimming with my hubby and kids, but I can’t snorkel. My kids can, and I’m sooo jealous. I always get a mouthful of seawater every time I try.

What is one trait or physical characteristic that you are proud of/love about yourself? I’d say my fingers and all because of their phenomenal typing speed. When I test myself, it’s around 75-80 words per minute. That’s wicked fast–and I’ve never chipped one of my long fingernails in the process. J

Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers? Write because it’s your passion, and never stop. Your writing will improve the harder you work at your craft.

Joanne Wadsworth (2)About the Author: Reading romance books captivated Joanne Wadsworth as a teenager, particularly when she tucked herself into bed at night and continued to dream those stories as she slept. Author Spotlight: Renita Pizzitola

Welcome to the Author Spotlight, Renita Pizzitola!

Nicknames: Reni

Where do you live: Texas

Your favorite dessert: Ice Cream

Your favorite TV series: I don’t watch much TV (I know I’m weird)

Last book you read: Flawed by Kate Avelynn

Last movie you watched: Rise of the Guardians (with my kiddos)

Last song (or album) you bought: Pink Blow Me (One Last Kiss)

A book/series you could read over and over again: Anything by Richelle Mead

Coke or pepsi? Coke Zero

Day or night? Night

Pen or pencil? Pen

Summer or winter? Winter

Cat or dog? Dog

Tea or coffee? Coffee!! ← results from too much coffee

Plotter or pantser?  Both but mostly pantser

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer? I think I’ve known my whole life, but by high school it was definitely my dream.

What are you working on now? Besides a mountain of Gilded edits, a new adult contemporary romance.

If you decided not to be a writer, what would your other dream job be? Why? Writing full time would be my dream job, but I do love my other job as a preschool teacher. Not many people get paid to finger paint! :)

What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done in your life? It may not be the scariest but right now I’d say the release of my debut novel terrified me. I had this overwhelming fear no one would like it.

Who is the one person that has singlehandedly inspired you the most in your life? My Dad. He encouraged me to pursue writing and without him I probably wouldn’t be published.

What is one talent that you’re hopeless at, but you wish you had? I wish I could paint (not finger painting, I rock at that) like real easel and paint kind of painting.

What is one trait or physical characteristic that you are proud of/love about yourself? Hmm… My sense of humor, I guess.

Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers? Don’t be scared to ask question. Learn everything you can about writing. You have an amazing story to tell, don’t let it get overlooked because of writing errors.

The Blackened Night by L.K. Below

bottom image

14 Days until the release of This Blackened Night, The Order: Book 3!

Every author has a set of characters more dear to their hearts than any others. In most cases, this stems from these characters being among the first ever created. I won’t claim Lori and Terrence were my very first, but they did come close. Their first book, Stalking Shade, which released in 2011, was originally written in 2007. And rewritten. And rewritten.

And now it feels like a dear friend is moving away. With the release of This Blackened Night on September 24th, 2012, the trilogy will come to an end. Lori might be a prickly character, not easy for anyone but Terrence to love, but I had a lot of fun with her. When I wrote this third book late last year, I dragged my feet to see it finished for the same reason. I didn’t want to let the pair of them go. A not-so-secret part of me is hoping for an overwhelming response from readers asking me to continue so I have an excuse to revisit my favorite characters.

For now, I’m counting down the days until the third book releases. Maybe you’ll fall in love with Lori and Terrence every bit as fiercely as I have. Lori might be stubborn in pushing people away, but Terrence is the most persistent character I’ve ever written. Good thing, too.

Join me in celebrating the release of the third book a bit early with this short, sweet teaser excerpt:

This Blackened Night by L.K. Below

With murders cropping up all around, who should she trust?

After months of searching, Lori finally scrounges up a clue as to the whereabouts of the missing leader of her secret organization. But her vision isn’t encouraging–it points to her vampire companion Terrence as the culprit.

Terrence is adamant that he isn’t at fault. Even though she knows she might be walking into a trap, she follows his lead to a shabby island port. When her informants start turning up dead with puncture wounds in their necks, Lori wonders just how well she knows Terrence. And why does he act different during the search than in their hotel room?

Lori doesn’t know who to trust anymore. She only hopes that she won’t be the next victim.

Six Sweet Sentences from the book:

Another death. She wouldn’t let that smug, persistent bastard get away with it. Not when her indecision might cause someone else’s death. Drawing her stake from her boot, she picked her way out of the station. Then she gunned for her rented motel room.

Terrence would pay, if it meant her last breath.

Bio: If L.K. Below gets far too attached to her characters, well, that’s because they’re interesting people. Read two of her favorites in her urban fantasy series, The Order. I Have GREAT News …

After 6 months of querying and hair-pulling (if you’ve been through it, you know how it goes) I decided to trunk DESTINY GIFT. Some may think 6 months is too little, but I queried a lot and got tons of feedback.

See, DESTINY GIFT got several partial and full requests—I would say a 50% rate—but several only looked at it and said I should make it YA or Adult before trying to query again. That frustrated me. I wouldn’t back down from NA, nevertheless, I realized I should rewrite the whole first half of the thing to pick up the slow pace.

I had began the rewrites of DESTINY GIFT when I saw a pitch contest at Savvy Authors. I remember thinking “hey, what the hell, one more try” …

Fast forward a few  months (while I moved from Brazil back to the US and settled my life again and rewrote the first half of the ms): last Tuesday, I got an offer of publication, and now that it’s official, I can tell you …

Destiny Gift, my New Adult Paranormal Romance, will be published by Lyrical Press!

I’m delighted to be working with editor Abby Rose from Lyrical Press, who was the  judged of Savvy Authors’ pitch contest*. She understands my story and she wants to see it published as much as I do. We exchanged many emails and we even talked about the Destiny Gift’s sequels and she loves all my ideas! I’m really, really happy to have her on my side for this ride ;)

I can’t believe this is finally happening. I’m still on a dream and I’m afraid of waking up … guys, I’m so happy! This is my first step into the publishing world and oh, am I happy about it!

I want to thank my husband for giving me the sentence that became this whole book. True story. It was, basically, his idea. THANK YOU, LOVE! Thanks to my family who always supported me, to my friends and my lovelies CPs and my NA sisters and the whole writing community. You’re all amazing! And a special thanks to Abby Rose for believing in me, and Renee Rocco for welcoming me into their family!

Signing the papers!

So freaking excited! This is happening! Yay!

Want to know more about DESTINY GIFT? I have an under-development storyboard on Pinterest, I have an interview with my hero, the announcement of being the finalist of a contest, a pitch and the first 150 words used on another contest, and the query and the first 500 words which were used on yet another contest.

Thanks everyone!

Cheers,

*By the way, there are lots of pitches with agents and editors coming on Savvy Authors, you guys should check it out.
