Excerpt:

I knew what I had to do. Orders were clear… KILL ON CONTACT.

The thing is, it was Nick.

Before I knew what I was doing, I’d released my hold. He got up and rubbed his mouth.

“What did I tell you about giving second chances?”

“You won’t hurt me,” I said.

“Honey, you are so wrong! I wouldn’t even blink an eye, no pun intended,” he smiled. “Next time you won’t be so lucky. If you ever get the chance again, take it.” He shoved me down and gave me a hard kick in the ass. He started to leave but turned instead, his smile still plastered across his scarred face. “If you can.”

I watched him leave and took a deep breath. I had to give this some thought. I wondered if there was any excuse I could come up with that the Organization would believe. I was going to be in so much trouble. And it was possible they would even strip my abilities away. Although my job could be mentally exhausting, I knew that, deep down, I couldn’t give up what made me, me. I was a badass, I liked using my extensive training to bring down the bad guys of the world, and what had I just done? I’d let the worst of them walk away. I came into this Organization to serve a purpose, and I had never regretted it. Until now.

Nick had taken advantage of all the knowledge he’d gained when he was part of the Org. He was guilty of kidnapping, attacking government buildings, killing a lot of people, and was considered enemy number one for all Luminaries. But while I had no respect left for him, I couldn’t hate him. Not like the rest of them did. This was the man with whom I had exchanged wedding vows, the man who was once my whole world, and he had to be taken down. But he still had enough power over me that I’d let him go. Stupid heart. I never wanted to be one of those girls again, the ones who live for love or die for it. No, love no longer had any place in my empty chest.

The problem was, I’d found my heart staring at me through one eye, and I’d lost my shit.

Everyone remembered the day the sky went black. The day the sun was wiped from the sky. They remember the wind as it brought in the darkness; the way the earth shook and everything changed.

Everyone remembered the screams as the darkness ate those who were out in the open, those who had surrounded themselves by light, and those who made noise.

Everyone remembered the voice from the sky and the way food disappeared.

At least, that’s what I hoped. I hoped that there was an ‘everyone’ that would remember because I am not sure how many are left, how many survived. Or if anyone did.

I hoped that I wasn’t alone.

I remembered that day.

I remembered because it was the day I became alone.

It was the day that everything was perfect until the monsters took it away. Then the house went silent and the birds stopped singing. It was the day when everyone disappeared, everyone except the boy, the only person I have seen in two years. The boy I talk to through the glass.

Book Blitz: Only Between Us

Only Between Us by Mila Ferrera
Publication date: September 3rd 2013
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance
Synopsis:

Last semester, Romy escaped from an abusive relationship with the guy she’d thought was the man of her dreams. This semester she’s putting herself back together, determined to reclaim her passion for art and for life. When she signs up for a painting class at the local art co-op, the possibility of passion becomes very real — in the form of her teacher, Caleb. Both mysterious and seriously hot, Caleb bares his soul on his canvases, and Romy’s fascinated by what she sees.

Caleb is just trying to keep his head above water. Caring for his traumatized, unstable sister is getting harder every day, and his paintings are so dark and bleak that no one is buying. Teaching classes at the co-op is no longer enough, and now he’s going to have to sell more than just his art to the wealthy, sex-starved women in his classes. But when Romy comes along, she makes everything more complicated. She sees the truth in his paintings — a truth no one else has realized, until now.

Romy and Caleb might have a real shot together — one that could heal them both. But when ghosts from their pasts re-emerge, determined to keep them apart, will they be strong enough to hold on to each other?

Excerpt:

From Romy’s perspective:

The stairs creak and we look up to see a guy coming down the steps. He looks to be in his mid-twenties, maybe a few years older than I am, and he moves with the careless grace of an athlete.

“Holy hotness,” breathes Jude, mimicking my thoughts perfectly. It’s not that I’m on the prowl, but in this life, there are a few objective truths, and this guy’s attractiveness is one of them. His jeans hang from his lean hips and are stained with paint. A similarly decorated t-shirt clings to his frame, and there’s a smear of blue on his tanned, muscular forearm. He has chin-length, chocolate brown hair, but he’s pulled some of it away from his face in a partial ponytail high on the back of his head. And that gives us a perfect view of his wolf-gray eyes, which skate over us with mild interest as he descends the stairs and walks toward us.

“You guys here for my class?” he asks, nodding toward the classroom. Oh my God. He’s the teacher.

“Absolutely,” Jude says quickly, newly enthusiastic, and I can’t hold in my laugh.

“Head on in and grab an easel. We’ll start in a few minutes. I’m Caleb,” he says, holding his hand out to Jude, who shakes it and introduces himself.

Caleb turns his gaze to me and offers his hand. “Romy,” I say as I take it, my heart beating a little faster as my skin touches his.

He lets go first. “Have you painted before?” he asks softly, giving my toolbox a questioning glance.

“A little.” That’s a lie. I minored in art in college, and painting was my passion. Until last year. I was passionate about a lot of things until last year, actually.

He smiles, and it’s as warm as his skin and steals my breath. “You look nervous, Romy. You don’t have to be. This is supposed to be fun.”

Excerpt:

We hurried to the bridge and crossed as fast as it would allow. A splash came from one side, followed by the sight of opalescent scales. I urged Lexie to move faster in front of me, but another splash made me jump. Then there were two more splashes. The water rippled as a tail tapped the surface before vanishing.

“She brought friends,” Grant whispered.

We walked a tight rope over shark-infested waters, or more accurately, merrow infested waters. I wasn’t sure which proved more threatening. The other side of the bridge seemed farther away with every splash. I’d counted at least four merrows. When we made it over, we rushed toward the trees.

“Faery-girl.”

I paused.

“Don’t turn around.” Grant urged me along from behind.

She called again, and against my better judgment, I turned. Though visible, the merrow from earlier kept a safe distance from the bank. A few other heads peeked out of the water. Their long hair floated on the surface and sunlight danced over their shimmering skin. Radiant eyes stared back at me but everything below the cheekbone remained hidden underwater. Their razor-sharp teeth included.

“They’re scared,” I said to myself.

“Shouldn’t we be, faery-girl?” The merrow focused on me.

“Keep walking, Kylie.”

I couldn’t tear my attention away. They outnumbered me. Why would I be a threat?

“My fellow merrows and I consider this area home, and when we last met I should have been more hospitable. I have seen the error of my ways. We extend safe passage over our bridge, now and always.”

“Thank you?” I answered, totally bewildered.

“It is our pleasure. We wish you no ill-will and hope you will grant us the same.”

“I’m not going to hurt you.”

Grant urged me along, discouraging the conversation.

“Thank you. Safe travels, faery-girl.” She dove in the water, and then they were gone.

Grant pushed me onward not giving me a chance to mull over what had happened.

Once we were a safe distance into the forest, he said, “You should never get into a conversation with a merrow.”

“They were scared. Of me.”

“They can twist conversations to suit themselves.”

Conor, who’d been walking ahead of us but in earshot, looked over his shoulder. “What did you do to her?” He’d kept his tone light.

“I stopped her. I didn’t mean to hurt her.” He glanced back again, nodded then turned forward. “Really I didn’t,” I whispered as guilt settled over me. I didn’t want people to fear me. What had I become?

Grant smiled and squeezed my hand. “We know you didn’t.”

Problem was, I wasn’t so convinced of my innocence.

Book Blitz: Life, Love & Lemons

Couple lying on a picnic table

Title: Life, Love & Lemons
Author: Magan Vernon
Expected release date: August 20, 2013
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Category: Young Adult
Available at: Amazon | B&N

Book Description:

When life hands you lemons, sometimes you have to say screw the lemons and bail.

Seventeen-year-old Bentley Evans had it all. Then her Dad got laid off.

Now she has to move across town to a small apartment and leave her life of luxury for public school and a job at the local burger place. Just when her world seems like it’s crumbling she finds solace in the unlikely punk boy next door, Kai Stone. But as their relationship blossoms, a jealous ex-girlfriend and a secret to tell that threatens to bring disaster back into Bentley’s life.

Excerpt:

“You know I’m pretty sure that all that’s involved in high school dancing is just dry humping and swaying back and forth,” I said as Kai helped me move my parent’s couch back.

“Well, I don’t want to dry hump or just sway back and forth,” he said with a big grin on his face before setting the couch down.

“We don’t have to do this right now either. It’s a Sunday morning and all.” I walked over to the front of the couch, not taking my eyes off of him.

“Homecoming is Saturday, and the only dance I know is the Hokey Pokey.” He shrugged. “Besides Mom and my sisters are at small group and your parents can sleep through anything, so why not now?”

“Okay.” I let out a deep breath and opened my computer. “But you really didn’t take any kind of dance classes? I had ballroom dancing freshman year in gym.”

“Bentley, I’ve gone to public school all of my life. The only dance we ever learned was line dancing when I was in grade school up in Wisconsin, and I’m not doing that at Homecoming.” He laughed.

I started up the song and set my laptop down and stepped in front of Kai, putting my right hand up toward him. “I definitely don’t think there will be line dancing at Homecoming,” I said, putting my hand in his.

“And you make fun of my music?” Kai asked as the song crooned through the speakers on my laptop. I put Kai’s right hand on my hip, and then placed my left hand on his upper arm.

“This is Sinatra, I really don’t think there is anything to be making fun of, and besides I don’t think we could really do ballroom dancing to punk rock.”

“I’m sure we could try.” He smiled and kissed my forehead.

I rolled my eyes. “Okay, now that we have the arm position it’s time to move our feet, and if you step on my bare feet I am going to punch you.”

He playfully hovered his foot over mine, so I pinched his arm. “If you don’t behave then I’m switching the music to country.”

He let out a big sarcastic sigh. “Fine.”

“Okay, so left foot then right foot then together,” I said as we moved in unison.

“Then right foot goes back and then the left foot meets it.”

We moved together doing a few box steps. It felt kind of silly to be dancing in my pajamas in the living room.

“You know, I really don’t think that anyone is going to be doing the waltz at Homecoming,” I muttered I looked up to see him mouthing ‘left, right, together’.

“Well what do people usually do then?” He looked down at me and stopped mouthing the words.

The Sinatra song ended and a slower punk rock song played, one that Kai had actually put on my computer.

“Usually…” I put both my arms around his neck. “It’s kind of more of a close, swaying motion.”

“Oh.” He wrapped his long arms around my waist and pulled me as close as I think two people can get when one was over six foot and the other was barely over five foot three.

“Like this?” He swayed slowly back and forth.

“Usually it’s not some sort of a giant dancing with a midget.” I laughed.

“Fine then.” He bent at his knees and picked me up off of the ground, so that my legs were dangling in the air while he continued to sway back and forth. “Is that better, shorty?”

I wrapped my bare legs around his waist. “Now it is.”

I leaned in and ran my tongue along his bottom lip, tracing the lines of his lip ring.

“I don’t think that’s part of the waltz.” He smiled and pressed his forehead to mine.

“It is now.” I kissed him, pretty hard, since he fell back into the couch with me still in his arms.

Maybe I should have taken him up on the night alone instead of Homecoming. It felt so good to just be in his arms, and the kissing wasn’t so bad either. I could forget about the world every time that Kai kissed me. It was like his lip piercing had some kind of magical powers that just made all my problems disappear as long as we were kissing.

Now, nearly a decade later, Alex and Grayson are long over and twenty-two-year-old Lia has finally managed to forget all those lonely nights she spent pining after her sister’s boyfriend. But when Grayson unexpectedly arrives back in town with Alex for Labor Day weekend and the two announce that they’re not only back together but engaged, all the feelings that Lia buried suddenly come bubbling back to the surface.

But Lia is no longer the awkward, gangly tomboy she was at fourteen. Far from it. And Grayson is conflicted by the lustful thoughts he’s now having for her. Excerpt:

Grayson

My chest hitches when I see her, barely visible in the porch light, lumbering down the walkway to the beach, the blackness of the night swallowing her up with each step.

I eye the door to the hallway.

The door to everything that happens after this moment.

I suddenly feel like my entire life will be decided by which side of it I’m on.

This side—right here where I stand—is the side I’ve always known. The one I have all the answers to. This is the side on which I marry Alex and she bears my children and we buy a town house in Brooklyn together. This is the side I always thought I wanted to be on.

And that side, over there—through that doorway, down those stairs, onto that beach—that is the side I know nothing about. A foreign land. With no certainties and no answers. The side that terrifies me.

My gaze drills into the wooden door. My skin feels hot. My mouth is dry. My fingers twitch.

And then suddenly, there is no more choice.

My body moves without permission from my mind.

In three paces I’m in the hallway. In ten juddered heartbeats I’m down the stairs. In a dizzying montage of choppy, breathless still frames, my bare feet stagger down the walkway, sinking into the cool sand.

Lia stands motionless at the edge of the water, staring out into the darkened horizon, as though she might find answers there. As though the world beyond this shore might make more sense. The full moon casts a faint light on the side of her face, causing her skin to glow.

The sand hides the sound of my heavy footfalls as I stride toward her.

When my hand tightens around her arm, she is startled but doesn’t scream. When I pull her around to face me, she opens her mouth to protest. To continue the tirade she began in the parking lot of the bar. But when my lips crush decisively against hers, claiming her with a consuming, covetous kiss, everything falls silent.

Only the waves dare to breathe.
