Chatting with Mallory Kane

Today, I have the honor of interviewing Mallory Kane and her new book, NO HERO.

A darkly handsome New Orleans detective who insists he’s no hero is blindsided by his one-time lover, a sexy investigative TV reporter, who exposes his secret troubled past to the whole world…and nearly costs him his job. When the at-risk teens he mentors start turning up dead, his vow to protect the other kids hits a major snag…his only clue to finding the determined killer is held by the one woman he never wants to see again. Compelled to work together to solve the vicious murders before another child dies, their passion reluctantly reignites, and their mutual mistrust slowly turns to respect as she realizes there’s much more to being a hero than outward appearances, and his deeply wounded heart gradually opens to the possibility of love.

Goodreads – Amazon – Barnes and Nobles

Q: Welcome Mallory Kane.  Why don’t you tell us a little bit about NO HERO?

Mallory: Teenagers are being murdered in New Orleans. Not just any teens, teens from Detective Devereux Gautier’s Johnson Center for Homeless Teens. Dev is determined to catch the killer before any more kids are killed, but he has no leads. Then Reghan Connor shows up, telling him she knows who the killer is. He’d be more inclined to believe her if she hadn’t exposed the past he’d worked for 20 years to hide on her TV news show. But when another teen is murdered, Dev begins to realize that Connor may have the key to catching the killer. But she nearly destroyed his career and his life once. If he works with her on this case, what will stop her from doing it again?

Q: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Mallory: I wrote my first poem, Miss Mousie Had A Tea Party, at around age eight and my first short story, a romantic suspense about a girl who visited a dude ranch, met a bad boy, falsely accused, solved a mystery and experienced her first kiss, at around age thirteen.

Q: Are you a plotter or a pantster?

Mallory: Years ago I, like a lot of other writers, considered myself a pantser. But once I’d sold my first book to Harlequin Intrigue in 2000, I realized that I no longer had the luxury of writing a book by the seat of my pants. If I wanted to write 3 or 4 books a year, I was going to have to make some sort of plan. I worried about plotting a book out before I started writing it. I was afraid I’d lose the magic that happened when I let the book take its own path. But in fact, I don’t feel like I’m missing out on magic at all. Whether plotting or pantsing, there’s still plenty of magic.

Q: What are you working on now?

Mallory: I’m finishing up a novella for an anthology, which will be published by Harlequin Intrigue in March of 2013. I’m almost done. As soon as I turn in the novella, I start work on a novel that will be published in May of 2013, also for Harlequin.

Q: Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers?

Mallory: My advice for anyone who wants to write for publication is never ever ever ever ever give up. Ever. If you truly want to write and see your book in print, you may have to go through a lot of rejections. Don’t let them get you down.

Q: What book or series can you read over and over again without getting bored?

Mallory: The book I can read again and again is Lord Johnnie by Leslie Turner White. It’s a swashbuckling historical romance written in — I believe — 1943. It was the first ‘romance’ I ever read. Re-reading it gives me a comfortable, yet thrilling feeling that no other book does.

Q: If you decided not to be a writer, what would your other dream job be?

Mallory: I would probably pursue art. I love oil painting as well as computer-generated art.

Q: What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done in your life?

Mallory: Get married. I was 27 when I got married, and I knew that I was old enough to set out on this journey rationally, instead of with my head in the clouds. Yeah, right. After 38 years, I’m happy to say that as scary as it was, getting married was also the best thing I’ve ever done.

Q: Who is the one person that has singlehandedly inspired you the most in your life?

Mallory: My daddy. He always told me that I could do anything I put my mind to. And he treated me as if I could do anything. He taught by example, excelling at everything he did in life, and he was always my biggest fan. When I published my first book, he told me that if he could write, he’d never do anything else.

Q: If you could take a trip to any foreign country RIGHT NOW, which one would you choose? Why?

Mallory: I had a remarkable opportunity this summer to visit the South of France. I would go back there in a heartbeat.

Q: What is one talent that you’re hopeless at, but you wish you had?

Mallory: Gardening. I can kill just about any plant with hardly any effort.

Q: What TV show are you most addicted to?

Mallory: My acceptable answer is Once Upon A Time. The guilty pleasure answer is America’s Next Top Model.

Q: If you were stuck on a deserted island, name three objects and three people you would want with you.

Mallory: Objects: my laptop, my kindle and my coffee pot. People: my husband, my best friend from New Orleans,  and my nephew.

Q: What is one trait or physical characteristic that you are proud of/love about yourself?

Mallory: I love my brain. I spend a lot of time inside it–writing, daydreaming, night-time dreaming. I enjoy my imagination and such intelligence as I have.  I appreciate my ability to take a snippet of conversation or of a TV show and grow it into a plot for a book.

Thank you so much for allowing me to answer these questions. They are really fun and imaginative. I had a great time.

All the Broken Pieces, by Cindi Madsen is available for pre-order on: Amazon | Barnes & Noble Be sure to add it to your TBR pile on Goodreads!

Excerpt:

Olivia reached up, feeling the tender spots on her head. Her fingers brushed across a row of—were those little ridges made of metal?
“Careful. The staples are almost ready to come out, but it’s still going to be sore for a while.”
Staples?!Her stomach rolled. I have staples in my head? She lowered her now-shaking hand. “Can I get a mirror?”
Mom looked at Dad, then back at her. “I don’t think that’s a good idea. Not until you’ve healed a little more.”
Mom patted Olivia’s leg. “You just relax. We’ll be back in a few minutes.”
The two of them left the room, but when Mom swung the door closed, it didn’t latch. Olivia could hear their voices in the hall.
“I still think we should…” She couldn’t make out the rest of Dad’s muffled words. “…know if I can do this.”
“…late for that,” Mom said. “We’d lose everything, including…” Her voice faded as they got farther away. “…have to move.”
Olivia could tell the conversation was tense, but the words were impossible to decipher now. Holding a hand in front of her face, she turned it back and forth. A plastic tube ran from her arm to a machine next to her bed. She peeked into her nightgown and stared in horror at the long red stripe running down her chest.
Sick.
You’re alive. You shouldn’t be thinking about looks.
Lowering her hand, she scanned the room. I wonder how my face looks. From the way Dad stared at me, plus the fact Mom won’t let me see a mirror, it must be bad.
Brains are more important than looks.
That’s what ugly people say.
Olivia put her hands on her head and squeezed. “Stop it,” she whispered to her arguing thoughts, hysteria bubbling up and squeezing the air from her lungs. What was happening to her? Why didn’t she recognize her parents or know where she was? Who she was? Tears ran warm trails down her cheeks. “Just make it all stop.”

5 Reasons to Love Daemon

Before diving into the 5 reasons to love Daemon, let me tell you two things:

First, I opened the book—the amazing OBSIDIAN by the equally amazing Jennifer Armentrout from Entangled Publishing, on my kindle and searched for passages to include on this post. I wanted five. On the first half of the book, I ended up with more than 30 passages! I couldn’t decide which ones to include because I wanted to include EVERYTHING!

Second, my plan was to read some passages only. I remembered enough of the book to skim through and end up directly on the passages I was looking for. But, oh no, I ended up rereading the whole thing! Why? Because it’s THAT good! I finished at 2am, even though I knew I had to wake at 6am the next morning!

5 Reasons to Love Daemon

1. Daemon is HOT and GORGEOUS:

Heavy footsteps came from the other side, and then the door was swinging open and I was staring at a very broad, tan, well-muscled chest. A naked chest. My gaze dropped and my breath sort of … stalled. Jeans hung low on his hip, revealing a think line of dark hair that formed below his navel and disappeared under the band of the jeans.

His stomach was ripped. Perfect. Totally touchable. Not the kind of stomach I expected on a seventeen-year-old-boy, which is how old I suspected he was, but yeah, I wasn’t complaining. I also wasn’t talking. And I was staring.

My gaze finally traveling north again, I noted thick, sooty lashes fanning the tips of high cheeks and hiding the color of his eyes as he looked down at me. I needed to know what color his eyes were.

“Can I help you?” Full kissable lips turned down in annoyance.

His voice was deep and firm. The kind of voice accustomed to people listening and obeying without question. His lashes lifted, revealing eyes so green and brilliant they couldn’t be real. They were an intense emerald color that stood out in vibrant contrast against his tan skin.

2. Daemon is a fun kind of trouble:

His gaze lingered on my face, and warmth blossomed in my belly. “Maybe I’m just curious why she is so enamored. Dee doesn’t take well to strangers. None of us do.”

“I had a dog once that didn’t take well to strangers.”

Daemon stared at me a moment, then laughed. It was a deep, rumbling sound. Nice. Sexy. Oh, God, I looked away. He was the kind of boy that broke hearts and left a long line of them shattered behind him. He was trouble. Maybe the fun kind of trouble, but he was also a jerk.”

3. Daemon is thoughtful, deep:

“I’ve always found that the most beautiful people, truly beautiful inside and out, are the ones who are quietly unaware of their effect.” His eyes searched mine intently, and for a moment we stood there toe to toe. “The ones who throw their beauty around, waste what they have? Their beauty is only passing. It’s a shell hiding nothing but shadoes and emptiness.”

4. Daemon is a gentleman even when he tries not to:

He helped me into Dee’s backseat mindful of the arm brace, by carrying me again and pacing me into the rear. “I can walk, you know.”

“I know.” He walked around and slid in next to me.

I tried to keep on my side of the car and my head up, but once Daemon settled next to me, my head sort of fell to his chest. He stiffened for a moment and then placed an arm around my shoulder. The warmth of him quickly seeped into my bones. It felt right, at that moment, to be nestled against him.

5. Daemon is provocative in many, many ways:

“So, you guys are like us in other, uh, departments?”

Daemon sat up, arching a brow. “Come again?”

I felt my cheeks flush. “You know, like sex? I mean, you guys are all glowy and stuff. I don’t see how certain stuff would work.”

Daemon’s lips curled into a half smile, and that was the only warning he gave. Moving unbelievably fast, I was on my back and he was above me in a flash. “Are you asking if I’m attracted to human girls?” he asked. Dark, wet waves of hair fell forward. Tiny droplets of water fell off the ends, splashing against my cheek. “Or are you asking if I’m attracted to you?”

Using his hand, he lowered himself slowly. There wasn’t an inch of space between our bodies. Air fled my lungs at the contact of his body against mine. He was male and ripped in all the places I was soft. Being this close to him was startling, causing an array of sensations to zing through me. I shivered. Not from the cold, but from how warm and wonderful he felt. I could feel every breath he took, and when he shifted his hips, my eyes went wide and I gasped.

Oh yeah, certain stuff was definitely working.

And that’s only up to 56% of the book! Tell me, what’s there not to love?

The first and the current cover.

I can’t wait for this one:

Coming August 2012!

Don’t forget to check the other today’s post from the 30 days of Daemon blog tour at Book Passion for Life—they have an ONYX teaser ;)

Holy Cauldron-bats, is it the caped crusader…Merlin? by Priya Ardis

Today I have Priya Ardis on the blog talking about her new book MY MERLIN AWAKENING.

A young Merlin has woken and must manipulate a high school girl so he can wield Excalibur to stop a devastating natural disaster, but then falls in love with her.

Take it away, Priya:

Holy Cauldron-bats, is it the caped crusader…Merlin?

You’ve heard the legends. His name pops up everywhere. Merlin. He’s some old dude with a long white beard, pointy hat, and robes. But does the most powerful wizard in the world really have to be a cartoon character? Well, I thought, why not trade in the robe for…tights?

While the Legend of Arthur is a classic story and the underlying themes of brotherhood, nobility, and the infamous love triangle still appeal today, when was the last time you looked at them through a more modern lens? If you think about it, Merlin has always been the Arthurian superhero. In the My Merlin Series, I sharpened the focus on this idea.

So, how to modernize Merlin as a superhero?

First, every superhero needs an alter-ego. Okay, no tights I promise. Actually I prefer jeans and a biker jacket. That’s what Clark Kent wore when he was being badass—under the influence of red kryptonite, of course. The classic struggle for the superhero is his dual identity. Is he really Clark Kent/Peter Parker/BruceWayne? Or is he really the superhero? Which one does he want to be? In My Merlin, Merlin’s alter-ego is Matt. This is a huge struggle in the book for Merlin…does he want to be the “Most Powerful Wizard in the World” or does he want to be plain-old Matt?

Second, every superhero needs an equally powerful super-villain. Yeah, there are minion bad guys but there is only one we truly love to hate. Batman had the Joker. Superman vs. Lex Luthor. When you think about the legends, Merlin didn’t really have one. The legends say that Merlin was tricked into defeat by a witch/nymph/girl called Viviane/Nimue. In My Merlin, Merlin has one very powerful and contentious relationship—his brother Vivane, aka Vane. After all, brothers can make the best friends but as archenemies they can be truly devastating.

Third, every superhero needs a super-power. Well, this was a no brainer. Merlin is the most powerful wizard in the world and all that. But his true super-power lies in being able to tell the future. (Not that he can necessarily stop the visions from happening!)

Fourth, every superhero needs to obsess over—the girl. Calling Lois Lane. In My Merlin, Arriane, aka Ryan, gives our hero a run for his magic. Since the story is told from her point of view, it’s interesting to see what our hero looks like from her perspective. Also she’s the tipping point…leading us into the last superhero modernization of Merlin…

Fifth, every superhero needs a cause in the here and now. Batman saves the city. Superman saves the world. I think Thor saved the galaxy. In My Merlin, the sword and stone crashes out of nowhere into the middle of London. Why is it here? What does it mean?  It can’t be good. Turn on the Merlin-signal, commissioner. We need a hero!

Want more Merlin? Watch the “If you can’t trust your boyfriend, who can you trust?” trailer:

My Boyfriend Merlin, Book 1, is available through most major book retailers. My Merlin Awakening, Book 2, is now available in limited release at Barnes and Noble. It will be out in full release in mid-June 2012.  Ever My Merlin, Book 3, will be available in late 2012. Add it to-read on Goodreads (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13641732-ever-my-merlin)

About the Author: I love stories of all kinds–but especially the gooey ones that make your nose leak and let your latte go cold. I started my first novel at sixteen, writing in notebooks on a long train ride in India during a hot summer vacation. My favorite Arthurian piece is the poem The Lady of Shalott by Lord Alfred Tennyson and a gorgeous song by Loreena McKennitt. A hopeless romantic, I’m a longtime member of the Romance Writer’s of America.

Being Opposites, by Jacqueline Gardner

If you’re here for my entry for the Curiosity Quills contest, click here.

Today I have Jacqueline Gardner here on the blog talking about her new book, MUTINY, book 1 of the M.E.R. series.

Eric’s life aboard a top secret stealth submarine as a member of the government’s M.E.R. program has been about discipline, cunning and survival. As both a soldier and a natural born regenerator, he can heal from any wound, but to stay alive he must accept a vein-burning serum that prevents his DNA from over-mutating.  In exchange Eric must follow his Chief Commander’s every order.  And never ask questions, no matter the assignment.

When he goes ashore on his first solo mission he runs into a complication he didn’t expect; Mariella, the target’s daughter.  She’s about to change everything.

Being Opposites

My husband and I are opposites.  He has blond hair and blue eyes, and I have black hair and brown eyes.  He can have hour long conversations with complete strangers, and I have a hard time opening up to people.  He’s a total early bird, and I’m a die-hard night owl.  And the list goes on and on.

When the two of us first started dating, I would always come home thinking the same thing.  I really like him but we have absolutely nothing in common!  But after getting to know him better, I realized I was wrong.  Though opposites at first glance, we were actually a lot more alike than either of us had ever thought.  So much in fact that it didn’t take long for us to start thinking the same things at the same time.

In my book MUTINY, Eric and Mariella (the two main characters) are complete opposites.  Eric is a soldier who thinks a lot like a computer.  He calculates probabilities and scenarios before making a choice, and he has been brought up to always follow orders.  Mariella is a rule-breaker.  She usually acts before she thinks, and she lets her emotions guide her decision making.

By the end of the book, Eric and Mariella discover that they are tied together in a way they never could have imagined.  Their personalities actually complement each other and they end up learning something new about themselves.  First impressions usually aren’t correct.

About the author:

Jacqueline Gardner works as a Story Editor for the production company, Labragirl Pictures.  Her love of storytelling began at an early age when she would make up stories with her grandmother before bedtime.  In early 2010, she completed her first novel and has been stuck on writing ever since.  She resides in Colorado and loves hiking, writing, fantasy fiction, and all things cupcake.

Cast for the Destiny Series, by Laura DeLuca

I have Laura DeLuca today on the blog, talking about her new book, DESTINY UNVEILED, book 2 of the Destiny Series.

Gabriella and Darron thought their magickal battle was over when they defeated the evil warlock, Richard. When her Aunt Donna seeks Gabriella’s help in rescuing her catatonic daughter from the Dark Coven, Gabriella discovers that her cousin holds a power within her that would be catastrophic in the hands of the evil witches.

Gabriella’s coven sets out on a journey that may be their last. Along the way, they meet new allies, face devastating treachery, and battle not only the Dark Coven, but the darkness within themselves.  When Gabriella finally comes face to face with the cousin she never knew existed, her true destiny is unveiled, and the fate of the mortal world is in her hands.

Read an except of Destiny Unveiled. Buy it on Smashwords or Amazon.

Take it away, Laura:

Cast for The Destiny Series

I think every writer dreams of the day they’ll see their books on the big screen.  Even if that did happen with Destiny, I doubt I would have much say over the casting. But it’s still fun to dream, and to pick out the cast!  I have been working on my cast for Destiny since I first started writing the books back in the 90’s. I’ve made changes as new faces have emerged, but there are a few that have stayed the same all these years. Today I thought I’d share by current picks for the main characters in Destiny & Destiny Unveiled. Some of these folks may already be too old to play teenagers, but it’s all in good fun.

Gabrielle DiPaola – Nina Dorbrev

I have been struggling with my pick for the lead of Gabriella for years. But finally, thanks to my husband’s love of the Sci Fi channel, I have made my decision. He was watching some movie about a werewolf and she was the star. Nina is exactly the way I envisioned Gabriella. She will need some colored contacts for the violet eyes, but I think Hollywood can pull it off.

Darron Zukawski-Evan Williams

Having a tween in the house has really helped with this task. I saw this guy in an episode of “Victorious” and I knew I had finally found my Darron. Looks like he has only had a few small roles, but I want to give him his big break as the male lead in Destiny.

Monte Holden – Andrew DiPalma

Believe it or not, this handsome young man is my baby cousin. He has been doing pretty well on the acting scene with some small roles in movies like “We are Marshall” and most recently, a hilarious part in an episode of “Cougar Town”. He just turned thirty, so we always joke that they need to hurry up and make Destiny into a movie before he’s too old to be in it.  You can check out my cousin on his website. Wow, an actor and a writer! Aren’t we one seriously talented family?! LOL

Flora Zarfati-Heather Matarazzo

My daughter definitely had a hand in finding Heather.  She loves the Princess Diaries, and Heather played Mia’s best friend. While I had to stereotype such a great actress into the dorky best friend role, she is definitely fitting for that part.

Richard Hodge-David Bowie

I always knew I wanted David Bowie to play Richard. He was the right look, and even the sexy British accent. And we all know he has that dark side to him after his amazing portrayal of the Goblin King in “The Labyrinth”. On a side note, Richard name was originally Gunther, but I decided to change his name after meeting one of the insurance underwriters I worked with from Lloyds of London. He wasn’t an evil warlock or anything, but he did have a hot British accent.

Adelaide DiPaola – Laura Bonariggo

I grew up watching “One Life to Live” with my grandmother, and Laura played one of my favorite characters, Cassie Carpenter. I always thought she was so beautiful when I was a little girl, so of course she would be my first pick to play the role of Gabby’s mom.

Hugh DiPaola-Kevin Sorbo

I have always been a huge fan of Kevin Sorbo ever since he was on Hercules (I know my dorkiness is showing again), so I had to squeeze him into the cast somewhere. He’s definitely too old play a teen, but I decided he’d be perfect for Gabby’s dad. But maybe that’s just because I want to see him in his underwear…

Linda Holden – Cassie DePaiva

Cassie is another “One Life to Live” star (I am so sad that they cancelled it). She is not only a fabulous actress and amazing singer; she’s also a really nice lady. I have an aunt with Downs Syndrome who adores Cassie, and she sent her a personal letter in her own handwriting , as well as a bunch of signed photos. It will also be really cool to reunite Cassie and Laura because they played cousins on “One Life To Live”.

Donna Brown-Sarah Alexander

If you’ve seen “Stardust”, you might recognize Sarah Alexander as one of the three witches. I chose her to play Donna because she actually has similar features to the real Donna, and the same small, pixie like stature. I would want her to darken up her hair for the role, but aside from that, she’s perfect. Donna is one of my best friends and coven sisters. She is also the one who encouraged me to make Destiny a series, so it only seemed fitting to make her a character.

Miranda Brown-Elizabeth Gillies

Miranda has an attitude from the second she comes on the scene, and Elizabeth Gillies has experience with attitude.  She plays one of the characters in “Victorious” and I don’t think I ever saw her smile.

Of course, there are other characters who I’d like to cast, but I didn’t want to make this post go on forever. These are the main characters. Most of them are in both books, except for Donna and Miranda who make their first appearance in Destiny Unveiled.  I really don’t watch much television or movies, so finding suitable actors is harder than you might think.

Did you read the books? Do you like my casting choices, or do you know of someone who might be a better fit? I’d love for others to share their casting choices for the Destiny series.
