Author Spotlight: Magan Vernon

Author Spotlight is a weekly feature where I post a quick interview with an author, and present you to their books. This is my way of supporting fellow writers and authors!

Welcome Magan Vernon to the Author Spotlight!

Nicknames: Mags, Meggie poo, Smeggles.

Where do you live: central Illinois. The insurance capital of the world!

Your favorite dessert: that is like asking me to pick my favorite child. Uhhh…anything with cookie dough in it.

Your favorite TV series: Roswell, Jack and Bobby, Sex and the City, you know all shows that ended at least ten years ago.

Last book you read: My Favorite Mistake by Chelsea Cameron

Last movie you watched: The Avengers

Last song (or album) you bought: I had a free download of some DMB.

A book/series you could read over and over again: I find that when I re-read something it doesn’t have e same magic as the first time. The only books I really read over and over are picture books to my daughter

Coke or pepsi? Pepsi

Day or night? day, not a night owl.

Pen or pencil? pen. I haven’t used a pencil since college.

Summer or winter? I pass and say fall.

Cat or dog? Dog.

Tea or coffee? Coffee

Plotter or pantser? A little bit of both. I try and do rough outlines for series, but really, I usually veer off of them.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer? Fifth grade, Mrs. Johnson’s class. We got to write tons of short stories and I loved it.

What are you working on now? A futuristic science fiction novel and a secret NA novel that involves political scandals and hot boys in dress shirts.

If you decided not to be a writer, what would your other dream job be? Why? I actually love my day job as a claim representative. I get to help people and its something different every single phone call.

What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done in your life? I jumped off the ledge of a quarry into a body of water that wasn’t really deep. I literally felt my heart stop.

Who is the one person that has singlehandedly inspired you the most in your life? My Nana. She passed away a few years ago. She was a Sicilian immigrant who worked full-time at Nelson Knitting and provided for four kids while still having dinner on the table every night. She was amazing.

What is one talent that you’re hopeless at, but you wish you had? Singing. I like to belt it, but deep voice girls can’t rock the high notes.

What is one trait or physical characteristic that you are proud of/love about yourself? Not to brag, but I have a killer set of blue eyes. My daughter inherited them from me and everyone comments on them.

Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers? Don’t look at other people’s success and think “I can do that.” Make your own goals and your own successes in your career.

Bio: Self-proclaimed geek-to-glam poster child who channels her inner geek by writing science fiction for teens, even though she slept with a night light until she was in middle school for fear of alien attacks. She now lives with her husband, daughter, and dog in central Illinois where she still sleeps with a night light…just in case.

Author Spotlight: Alex J. Cavanaugh

I’m a big supporter of fellow writers and authors, though I confess sometimes I’m at loss for whatelse to do.

Inspired by Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh and what he says about his blog being for others and not himself, I decided to come up with a new feature on my own blog. Every Saturday, I’m going to have a quick interview with a fellow author. You probably know most of them, but I’m hoping my interview will be quite different and give us a great insight of who lies behind the writer.

And, to start it all, why not interview the Ninja Captain himself?

Welcome to the Author Spotlight, Alex J. Cavanaugh!

Nicknames: Thanks to my blogger buddies, I am Ninja Captain Alex! (Also the Blogfather and Santa Claus. Don’t ask.)

Where do you live: Central Carolinas

Your favorite TV series: Currently Elementary

Last book you read: The Legend of Victor Standish by Roland Yeomans

Last movie you watched: Argo

Last song (or album) you bought: Threshold – March of Progress

A book/series you could read over and over again: I don’t usually re-read books, but we’ll go with the Shannara series by Terry Brooks. And the Bible of course.

Pen or pencil? Pen

Summer or winter? Winter! Hot, humid weather drives me crazy.

Cat or dog? Dog

Tea or coffee? Neither

Plotter or pantser? Plotter all the way!

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

AJC: When did I become serious? Maybe five years ago? Odd how I never intended to be an author, isn’t it?

What are you working on now?

AJC: My third book, CassaStorm, is with my critique partners, so I’ll be editing again very soon.

If you decided not to be a writer, what would your other dream job be? Why?

AJC: Metal God!!! What guy wouldn’t want to be a rock star? And I can play guitar and sing. Sort of…

What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done in your life?

AJC: Proposed to my wife.

Who is the one person that has singlehandedly inspired you the most in your life?

AJC: I have to pick two – my wife and Jesus.

What is one talent that you’re hopeless at, but you wish you had?

AJC: A sense of direction! I get lost easy…

What is one trait or physical characteristic that you are proud of/love about yourself?

AJC: Just the fact that I’m still in really good shape for my age!

Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers?

AJC: Read, write, and don’t give up.

To pilot the fleet’s finest ship…
Few options remain for Byron. A talented but stubborn young man with a troubled past and rebellious attitude, his cockpit skills are his only hope. Slated to train as a Cosbolt fighter pilot, Byron is determined to prove his worth and begin a new life as he sets off for the moon base of Guaard.
Much to Byron’s chagrin the toughest instructor in the fleet takes notice of the young pilot. Haunted by a past tragedy, Bassa eventually sees through Byron’s tough exterior and insolence. When a secret talent is revealed during training, Bassa feels compelled to help Byron achieve his full potential.
As war brews on the edge of space, time is running short. Byron requires a navigator of exceptional quality to survive, and Bassa must make a decision that could well decide the fate of both men. Will their skills be enough as they embark on a mission that may stretch their abilities to the limit?

“…calls to mind the youthful focus of Robert Heinlein’s early military sf, as well as the excitement of space opera epitomized by the many Star Wars novels. Fast-paced military action and a youthful protagonist make this a good choice for both young adult and adult fans of space wars.” – Library Journal

CassaStar was only the beginning…
The Vindicarn War is a distant memory and Byron’s days of piloting Cosbolt fighters are over. He has kept the promise he made to his fallen mentor and friend – to probe space on an exploration vessel. Shuttle work is dull, but it’s a free and solitary existence. The senior officer is content with his life aboard the Rennather.
The detection of alien ruins sends the exploration ship to the distant planet of Tgren. If their scientists can decipher the language, they can unlock the secrets of this device. Is it a key to the Tgren’s civilization or a weapon of unimaginable power? Tensions mount as their new allies are suspicious of the Cassan’s technology and strange mental abilities.
To complicate matters, the Tgrens are showing signs of mental powers themselves, the strongest of which belongs to a pilot named Athee, a woman whose skills rival Byron’s unique abilities. Forced to train her mind and further develop her flying aptitude, he finds his patience strained. Add a reluctant friendship with a young scientist, and he feels invaded on every level. All Byron wanted was his privacy…

“This sequel to Cavanaugh’s first novel, CassaStar, delivers on the promise of its predecessor, combining military action sequences and political intrigue with strong, memorable characters. Reminiscent of the action-driven stories of Robert A. Heinlein’s early fiction…” – Library Journal

The Blackened Night by L.K. Below

bottom image

14 Days until the release of This Blackened Night, The Order: Book 3!

Every author has a set of characters more dear to their hearts than any others. In most cases, this stems from these characters being among the first ever created. I won’t claim Lori and Terrence were my very first, but they did come close. Their first book, Stalking Shade, which released in 2011, was originally written in 2007. And rewritten. And rewritten.

And now it feels like a dear friend is moving away. With the release of This Blackened Night on September 24th, 2012, the trilogy will come to an end. Lori might be a prickly character, not easy for anyone but Terrence to love, but I had a lot of fun with her. When I wrote this third book late last year, I dragged my feet to see it finished for the same reason. I didn’t want to let the pair of them go. A not-so-secret part of me is hoping for an overwhelming response from readers asking me to continue so I have an excuse to revisit my favorite characters.

For now, I’m counting down the days until the third book releases. Maybe you’ll fall in love with Lori and Terrence every bit as fiercely as I have. Lori might be stubborn in pushing people away, but Terrence is the most persistent character I’ve ever written. Good thing, too.

Join me in celebrating the release of the third book a bit early with this short, sweet teaser excerpt:

This Blackened Night by L.K. Below

With murders cropping up all around, who should she trust?

After months of searching, Lori finally scrounges up a clue as to the whereabouts of the missing leader of her secret organization. But her vision isn’t encouraging–it points to her vampire companion Terrence as the culprit.

Terrence is adamant that he isn’t at fault. Even though she knows she might be walking into a trap, she follows his lead to a shabby island port. When her informants start turning up dead with puncture wounds in their necks, Lori wonders just how well she knows Terrence. And why does he act different during the search than in their hotel room?

Lori doesn’t know who to trust anymore. She only hopes that she won’t be the next victim.

Six Sweet Sentences from the book:

Another death. She wouldn’t let that smug, persistent bastard get away with it. Not when her indecision might cause someone else’s death. Drawing her stake from her boot, she picked her way out of the station. Then she gunned for her rented motel room.

Terrence would pay, if it meant her last breath.

Bio: If L.K. Below gets far too attached to her characters, well, that’s because they’re interesting people. Read two of her favorites in her urban fantasy series, The Order. Meet Claire and Josh, by Sasha Summers

Hi Juliana,

Thank you so much for having me today. And – for letting me gush about my new novel: Hollywood Ever After. I had so much fun writing this book.

The characters were very real to me so, by the books end, it was like visiting with old friends. So I thought I’d ‘introduce’ you to the heroine (Claire) and the hero (Josh).

Claire is very easy to relate to and I liked her. She’s this 35 year old mother of two who’s trying to figure things out now that she’s a single mom. She’s insanely talented, a writer and painter, but she’s very unsure of herself – tending to doubt her abilities versus recognize them. And she’s scarred, emotionally, from her past. I understood her hesitancy to commit or connect with anyone after she’d been so… damaged. But I wanted her to try, to find hope, and work towards it. Meeting Josh changes everything for her.

Josh is the perfect hero, really. I’ve never met a 28 year old man like him – but wouldn’t it be nice? He’s this sweet, ruffled, take-me-as-I-am kind guy who also happens to be drop-dead gorgeous. Oh, did I mention he’s a movie star? He is: the chics-lining-the-red-carpet-screaming-his-name kind of movie star. He’s not sold on the whole star thing but he loves acting enough to deal with the press too. He’s kind of got everything a 28 year old guy could want, but he’s missing something: home.

They just fell together, very sweetly and sincerely. From the second they meet, they click. I wanted them to work out and be happy. I hope you will too!

She wasn’t meant for movie stars, Hollywood, or happy endings. And then she met him.

Happy Endings are for fairy tales. Or the movies. Not for real life. At least, not Claire’s life. Even though she’s starting over, she knows better than to want too much this time. But when she falls, literally, into the strong arms of Hollywood’s ‘it’ boy Josh Wiley, Claire’s in for some surprises.

Her plans for rest and relaxation are forgotten as one incredible night with Josh becomes two…

And her heart begins to want him as much as her body. Will two kids, one bastard ex-husband, and Josh’s juggernaut career mean the end of their affair?

Or can Claire find her happy ending after all?

Pre order on InkSpell Publishing

About the author:

Sasha Summers is part gypsy. Her passions have always been storytelling, history, romance, and travel. She writes both lyrical romantic fantasy and contemporary romance. Her first play was written for her Girl Scout troupe. She’s been writing ever since.

She loves getting lost in the worlds and characters she creates; even if she frequently forgets to run the dishwasher or wash socks when she’s doing so. Luckily, her four brilliant children and hero-inspiring hubby are super understanding and supportive.

Chatting with Jeffe Kennedy

Today, I have the honor of hosting Jeffe Kennedy and her book, ROGUE’S PAWN, which releases today!

This is no fairy tale…

Haunted by nightmares of a black dog, sick to death of my mind-numbing career and heart-numbing fiancé, I impulsively walked out of my life—and fell into Faerie. Terrified, fascinated, I discover I possess a power I can’t control: my wishes come true. After an all-too-real attack by the animal from my dreams, I wake to find myself the captive of the seductive and ruthless fae lord Rogue. In return for my rescue, he demands an extravagant price—my firstborn child, which he intends to sire himself…

With no hope of escaping this world, I must learn to harness my magic and build a new life despite the perils—including my own inexplicable and debilitating desire for Rogue. I swear I will never submit to his demands, no matter what erotic torment he subjects me to…

Amazon, Barnes and Noble

Q: Welcome Jeffe Kennedy.  Why don’t you tell us a little bit about ROGUE’S PAWN?

Jeffe: The story is about a neuroscientist who falls through a metaphysical gate at Devils Tower and accidentally winds up in Faerie. Suddenly, everything she wishes comes true and she become deeply tangled with Rogue – who manipulates her into agreeing to give him her first-born child, which he will sire.

Q: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Jeffe: Not until I was in my mid-twenties, when I discovered that the career I was getting a PhD for wasn’t making me happy.

Q: Are you a plotter or a pantster?

Jeffe: I’m a pantser – though I prefer the term “mister.”

Q: What are you working on now?

Jeffe: The sequel to Rogue’s Pawn! I’m about halfway through it.

Q: Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers?

Jeffe: My best advice is the one thing most people don’t want to hear: write every day. Even if it’s only for a short space of time, it’s truly the best thing you can do. Build that habit. Do it every single day, no matter what.

Q: What book or series can you read over and over again without getting bored?

Jeffe: I’m not sure there is one. I’ve reread a lot of Anne McCaffrey and JD Robb’s In Death books. I went back and reread the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, which were interesting to read from an adult perspective. Mostly I feel like there’s so much stuff I haven’t read, that I don’t want to burn time reading something I already have!

Q: If you decided not to be a writer, what would your other dream job be?

Jeffe: Exotic animal vet!

Q: What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done in your life?

Jeffe: When I was in college, I took a bus to visit my boyfriend in Chicago. I arrived at 2am at the downtown bus station and he was late meeting me. The vultures were really circling – looking back, it was a stupid thing to do!

Q: Who is the one person that has singlehandedly inspired you the most in your life?

Jeffe: If I have to pick one person, I’d say my husband. He’s always supported me and helped me to see I can have anything I want.

Q: If you could take a trip to any foreign country RIGHT NOW, which one would you choose? Why?

Jeffe: The Maldives. The water looks so beautiful and perfect. I love to snorkel. And I want to see the islands before they’re under water.

Q: What is one talent that you’re hopeless at, but you wish you had?

Jeffe: Music. I simply am miserable at playing a musical instrument. I envy that ability so much.

Q: What TV show are you most addicted to?

Jeffe: I don’t watch TV, so I manage to escape that time sink. I look forward to getting the next season of Castle on Netflix, however…

Q: If you were stuck on a deserted island, name three objects and three people you would want with you.

Jeffe: A knife, a big bottle of hydrogen peroxide and a flare gun, along with my husband, Queen Elizabeth and President Obama. The latter two because everyone in the world would be looking for us!

Q: What is one trait or physical characteristic that you are proud of/love about yourself?

Jeffe: I have a lot of confidence and I’ve discovered that many people don’t have that – so I’m grateful for it.

About the Author:
Jeffe Kennedy took the crooked road to writing, stopping off at neurobiology, religious studies and environmental consulting before her creative writing began appearing in places like Redbook, Puerto del Sol, Wyoming Wildlife, Under the Sun and Aeon. An erotic novella, Petals and Thorns, came out under her pen name of Jennifer Paris in 2010, heralding yet another branch of her path, into erotica and romantic fantasy fiction. Since then, an erotic short, Feeding the Vampire, and another erotic novella, Sapphire, have hit the shelves.
Her contemporary fantasy novel, Rogue’s Pawn, book one in A Covenant of Thorns, will be published in July, 2012. Jeffe lives in Santa Fe, with two Maine coon cats, a border collie, plentiful free-range lizards and frequently serves as a guinea pig for an acupuncturist-in-training.
