Cover Love: GRAVITY

If you guys didn’t figure it out yet, I’ll tell you out loud: I’m a big fan of Entangled Publishing. So you know it’s a honor for me to host another cover reveal for one of their awesomesauce authors.

Here I present you with: GRAVITY by Melissa West (October 2012). A Sci-fi YA.

In the future, only one rule will matter:

Don’t. Ever. Peek.

Seventeen-year-old Ari Alexander just broke that rule and saw the last person she expected hovering above her bed – arrogant Jackson Locke, the most popular boy in her school. She expects instant execution or some kind of freak alien punishment, but instead, Jackson issues a challenge: help him, or everyone on Earth will die.

Ari knows she should report him, but everything about Jackson makes her question what she’s been taught about his kind. And against her instincts, she’s falling for him. But Ari isn’t just any girl, and Jackson wants more than her attention.  She’s a military legacy who’s been trained by her father and exposed to war strategies and societal information no one can know – especially an alien spy, like Jackson. Giving Jackson the information he needs will betray her father and her country, but keeping silent will start a war.

Doesn’t it sound great? Doesn’t it LOOK great? I can’t wait to put my hands on it!

RTW: Words we can’t live without

Road Trip Wednesday is a “Blog Carnival,” where YA Highway’s contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question that begs to be answered. In the comments, you can hop from destination to destination and get everybody’s unique take on the topic.

This week’s topic:

“What words do you absolutely hate? Which ones do you adore?”

HATE: nevertheless, just (though I use it A LOT), babe, slime, fart, hubris, alas, mishap, jealousy, moist

ADORE: adore, scarlet, starstruck, mythology, believe, dream, dance, ocean, light, butterfly, euphoria

I confess I’m not sure I chose those words for their spelling or their meaning … probably both. And I found out it’s way easier to come up with words I love than remember words I hate lol I’m sure both are ever growing lists, though.

What I hate is when people abbreviate every single word they type on social media. Okay, if you gotta do it once or twice to fit your thought into a tweet, but don’t make it a habit, please! It’s so annoying …

PS: I trolled a few posts from my fellow RTW’s participants before concluding mine and picked one or two words from them to add to my lists ;)

Your turn. What are the words you love and hate?

Cheers,

Is It Getting Hot in Here?

I wasn’t going to, but because I admire many of the ladies on this blogfest and know I’ll meet many other awesome writers, I decided to join the Is It Getting Hot In Here? bloghop hosted by Cassie Mae and Hope Roberson ;)

The following scene is from my beloved wip, DESTINY GIFT, a new adult paranormal romance. Here I give you Nadine and Victor:

“Please, get out!” I tried to push him back, but he wouldn’t budge. “Why are you doing this? Please, let me be.” I punched his chest. “I opened up my heart to you, and you shut me out. Please. GET OUT!”

“I won’t!” he yelled. Anger radiated from his eyes. “What do you want me to say?” He paced forward, making me retreat. “Want me to tell you that you get to me? That since the first time I saw you, you affected me?” His voice was high and rough. “That I tried not looking for you every time I felt the pain because I knew I would be weak and would fall for you? Do you realize that all the people I ever loved are now dead?”

He trapped me between the bed and him. His eyes shone, and he gritted his teeth, but he was on a roll. I couldn’t stop him. “Should I tell you that I’m scared of getting close to anyone because they might end up dead? That I’m scared of getting close to you?”

My heart went still. I was sure I had died. What was he saying?

He wrapped his arms around my waist, pulled me up, and covered my mouth with his.

God, I had dreamed of this moment so, so many times. Yet, this Victor wasn’t my Victor, was he? In truth, right at this moment, I didn’t care. All I wanted was to kiss him back.

And I did. His kiss was sweeter than I could have hoped for, his tender lips eagerly moving against mine, his tongue exploring my mouth as if it was a new, rich land to be discovered. One of his hands traveled up my spine until his fingers knotted my hair. The other hand went down, cupping my hips. Oh, and I was all over him too, my hands already under his shirt, exploring his lean, hard muscles.

Gently, Victor pulled my hair back, making me tilt my chin up. Helplessly, I moaned, startled by how avid he was. In my dreams, I had believed he would be gentle and calm. Very different from this Victor. And I loved every second of it.

With his tongue, Victor traced a line down my neck to my collarbone. He bit and pecked it, scorching my skin, using his hands to press me against him. I felt intoxicated by his scent, by his touch, by his breath. I had had time to imagine this, to picture the perfect moment when I would surrender to his charms and make love to him. Yet, this was far more perfect.

*fans self*

I hope you liked it ;)

My Dear Valentine

I’m a little sad today because my hubby is many thousand of miles away from me. We’ll talk many times through Skype and phone, but it’s not the same. He promised to take me out for a special dinner when he comes back ;)

Anyway, this is a day for celebration.

I want to wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day!

I made so many great friends and met so many great writers through social network, I can’t name them all in one post, but I would like to take this time to wish a Happy Valentine’s Day and thank my awesome CPs and friends: Jani Grey, Tracy Rohlfing, Ladonna Watkins and Jenny Kaczorowski.

I also want to thank you, my dear reader and visitor.

Have a great Valentine’s Day!

WHEN DID MY WRITING DREAM BEGIN?

On freshman year of high school in Brazil, my Portuguese teacher assigned a group project to my class: to write a short book. Just like that. Well, my best friends and I got together at my house, I baked a cake for them and left them eating while I wrote. And wrote. And wrote. The only part they took in it was to give me ideas of plot twists and then reading and telling me if it was good or not.

Next year, we had the same project to work on. This time, I wrote a book twice longer and more dramatic.

After that, I just wrote. I carried a notebook with me and wrote every single minute I could, even during classes.

I started a diary to keep notes of the interesting things that happened in my life, thinking that it could give me ideas for some books.

My stories revolved around my friends and I at first.

Then it changed and I wrote about fictional characters from my mind.

However, I never ever thought about being published. Not once.

Over the years, I wrote short stories and started stories, but never finished them. I collected interesting news from magazines and newspapers, things that could give me ideas or be added to other stories.

When I began college, my free time ended and the writing died. But not the ideas. Never the ideas.

And I never stopped reading. Yes, I read less than I had ever read, but books meant a lot to me, so I tried to keep reading at least.

For the next few years, my life went crazy. I went t the US, I couldn’t finish the major I started in Brazil, I didn’t know what major to choose, I graduated and couldn’t work since my visa didn’t allow me to, I thought about going back to college and do something else or go for a master degree so I didn’t just sit around at home waiting for my visa to change … I was lost and couldn’t see any lights at the end of the tunnel.

Then, something happened.

Disclaimer: please, don’t judge (too harshly) the following part. It just happened.

TWILIGHT came out.

The buzz around it was so huge, I had to read it and find out what it all was about.

I loved it! I read all 4 books in 6 days.

I thought about how good it made me feel, how I loved those books, how I wanted to pass on that feeling. And, to pass on that feeling, I had to write a book that made others feel like I felt.

It’s almost embarrassing to admit this, especially now that I feel kinda sick of TWILIGHT and all behind it. Just so you know, I didn’t even watch the last movie of the saga (yet). But it’s the truth.

Because of the way I felt reading and after having read The Twilight Saga, I went back to writing.

After that, we went back to Brazil and I started writing full time (it was March 2010).

Since I didn’t know anything about writing a real book other than the stories I wrote for myself, I took a few workshops and read lots of craft books.

And I’ve been writing full time ever since. In almost 2 years, I wrote about 5 novels, 2 novellas and 1 novelette and began several others that never saw an end—I know my writing improves with each new manuscript and that someday not too far in the future I’ll woo some agent with one of my manuscripts ;)

Right now, I’m organizing things to go back to the US (in the end of March). Things are crazy and for that I can’t find enough time to write. But once we’re back to the US and everything is settled down again, I’ll dig in. I can’t wait to write.

But like before, my mind is always working and the ideas are always brewing.

Sorry about the longish post =P

How about you? How did you begin writing?

Cheers,

ROW80 Check-in 02/12

Hello guys!

First, let me start with shiny news … I’m going back to the US! Yes! It’ll take about 1-2 months yet, while we get all documents ready, pack our things and close our house, but we should be there soon!

What this means? Well, I will slack on my ROW80 goals until after the move. The list of things to do before going is huge, plus I have family to visit before leaving. Actually, I believe the first couple of weeks back in the US will be very busy too … finding new house, buying everything new, finding a school for my daughter, etc … *phew* I get tired of thinking about it.

But it is very exciting too.

Unfortunately, the moving will require much of my writing time, so I will have to do something I didn’t want, but I don’t see other way out.

The other news, not so good: I’m dropping off ROW80 for this round.

I hope to be in the US and get things settled before the next round, so I can join you all again.

Well, guys, I’ll try to check on you all when I can. Good luck to all of you!

I’ll see you around ;)

Cheers,

ROW80 Check-in 02/05

Hello my friends!

Here we are for another check-in.

And I’m here to report some slacking.

My hubby went into a job trip  to the US last Sunday, so every member of my family expects to be visited while he is away. Since I write full-time, I’m jobless, you see, and I have tons of free time, so it won’t matter if I do nothing for many days. What they want, of course, is to spend time with my daughter, not me lol

These past few days I’ve been hanging with my mother-in-law or my brother, his wife and his daughter—they live in the same city. Then today, Sunday, I’m going to our family house at the beach. I’ll stay there until Wednesday WITHOUT ANY INTERNET CONNECTION!

Which means: not getting much done.

My goals:

  • Participate of the EditPalooza workshop offered by Savvy Authors from Jan/2 to Feb/4. (I’ve been warned this is super hard work and consumes many hours of the day. Let’s see if I can keep up!)
  • Write a novel (or get as far as I can with it).
  • Read 5 books each month (year total = 60).
  • Social network: blog at least once a week (not counting #ROW80 checkins), comment on blogs every other day, and tweet a little everyday.

Social Media: Hard to comment on blog through the phone. Hard to keep up with twitter through the phone, but I’m trying.

EditPalooza: On Monday, 4 assignments were posted. Then 2 more on Thursday. Now that I’m on “vacation” I’m feeling overwhelmed.

Reading: Read James Scott Bell’s book last week. Even though the workshop is not done yet, I just wanted to finish the book.

Reading Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvager.

Writing: Monday, I worked on some plot and outline. Don’t know how many words I wrote, but it was quite a few. And then I got nothing else done.

Hope you guys are doing WAY better than me!

Wanna check on my friends ROWers? Click here and scroll down to the post check-in from today.

Cheers,

Note: since I’m without internet for the next few days, forgive me for not getting back to you guys right away. I’ll catch up when I’m back!
