New Adult Pitch Contest

Hey there!

Today, at NA Alley, I’m talking about pitches, because tomorrow we’ll be hosting a critique session there that will serve as a training session for the awesome contest YAtopia will host on their blog on July 10th. They’ll be accepting 35-words pitches of New Adult manuscripts and agent Sara Megibow from Nelson Literary Agency and editor Heather Howland from Entangled Publishing will be choosing the winners!

The critique session tomorrow will have the participation of lovely New Adult author Lynn Rush. I hope to see you there!

NEW ADULT IS HAPPENING!

#ROW80 Round 03 of 2012 – Goals

Hello friends!

Tomorrow starts another round of ROW80!

Don’t know what ROW80 is? What a shame! No worries, I’ll gladly tell you about it. ROW80 is a challenge for people who knows life happens and sometimes screw your writing time … it’s also for people who can’t compromise to insane challenges like NaNoWriMo and JuNoWriMo because they simply don’t have enough time to write. Check the website for more info. But I encourage anyone, any writer to join. I’ve met some great writers through ROW80 and I’m happy to call them my friends ;)

Now, on to my goals for this round …

Before, I used to set up goals that extended for the 80 days of this challenge. This time,  I’ll do things different. I’ll set up weekly goals and state them on the previous check-ins.

For example, right now I’m going to state the goals for this first week. Sunday, during the check-in, I’ll account for what I achieved or not from those goals, and state the ones for the coming week.

I think this way will be easier to keep up with now that I’ll be working with my lovely editor and she might send edits over at any point and expect them soon. That means I’ll drop whatever I’ll be doing—writing, revising another book, critiquing CPs’ manuscripts—to do what the editor asks of me, return it to her, then proceed with what I had planned.

So, for this week: (note that this week my cousin is in town and staying with us, and that means not much will be done!)

  1. Write: Not sure how much I’ll be able to accomplish with my cousin here and with a holiday, but I’ll try to write every weekday!
  2. FastDraft starts Friday (7th) but I’m sure I’ll only be able to join the ranks on July 10th, after my cousin is gone.
  3. Read: Finish the book I’m reading and start another.
  4. Social media: blog at least once (besides check-in), and hop on Twitter a couple of times each day.
  5. Exercise: twice at least (Tuesday and Thursday)

That’s it for now. Don’t forget to check the other ROWers!

Cheers,

Chatting with Mallory Kane

Today, I have the honor of interviewing Mallory Kane and her new book, NO HERO.

A darkly handsome New Orleans detective who insists he’s no hero is blindsided by his one-time lover, a sexy investigative TV reporter, who exposes his secret troubled past to the whole world…and nearly costs him his job. When the at-risk teens he mentors start turning up dead, his vow to protect the other kids hits a major snag…his only clue to finding the determined killer is held by the one woman he never wants to see again. Compelled to work together to solve the vicious murders before another child dies, their passion reluctantly reignites, and their mutual mistrust slowly turns to respect as she realizes there’s much more to being a hero than outward appearances, and his deeply wounded heart gradually opens to the possibility of love.

Goodreads – Amazon – Barnes and Nobles

Q: Welcome Mallory Kane.  Why don’t you tell us a little bit about NO HERO?

Mallory: Teenagers are being murdered in New Orleans. Not just any teens, teens from Detective Devereux Gautier’s Johnson Center for Homeless Teens. Dev is determined to catch the killer before any more kids are killed, but he has no leads. Then Reghan Connor shows up, telling him she knows who the killer is. He’d be more inclined to believe her if she hadn’t exposed the past he’d worked for 20 years to hide on her TV news show. But when another teen is murdered, Dev begins to realize that Connor may have the key to catching the killer. But she nearly destroyed his career and his life once. If he works with her on this case, what will stop her from doing it again?

Q: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Mallory: I wrote my first poem, Miss Mousie Had A Tea Party, at around age eight and my first short story, a romantic suspense about a girl who visited a dude ranch, met a bad boy, falsely accused, solved a mystery and experienced her first kiss, at around age thirteen.

Q: Are you a plotter or a pantster?

Mallory: Years ago I, like a lot of other writers, considered myself a pantser. But once I’d sold my first book to Harlequin Intrigue in 2000, I realized that I no longer had the luxury of writing a book by the seat of my pants. If I wanted to write 3 or 4 books a year, I was going to have to make some sort of plan. I worried about plotting a book out before I started writing it. I was afraid I’d lose the magic that happened when I let the book take its own path. But in fact, I don’t feel like I’m missing out on magic at all. Whether plotting or pantsing, there’s still plenty of magic.

Q: What are you working on now?

Mallory: I’m finishing up a novella for an anthology, which will be published by Harlequin Intrigue in March of 2013. I’m almost done. As soon as I turn in the novella, I start work on a novel that will be published in May of 2013, also for Harlequin.

Q: Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers?

Mallory: My advice for anyone who wants to write for publication is never ever ever ever ever give up. Ever. If you truly want to write and see your book in print, you may have to go through a lot of rejections. Don’t let them get you down.

Q: What book or series can you read over and over again without getting bored?

Mallory: The book I can read again and again is Lord Johnnie by Leslie Turner White. It’s a swashbuckling historical romance written in — I believe — 1943. It was the first ‘romance’ I ever read. Re-reading it gives me a comfortable, yet thrilling feeling that no other book does.

Q: If you decided not to be a writer, what would your other dream job be?

Mallory: I would probably pursue art. I love oil painting as well as computer-generated art.

Q: What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done in your life?

Mallory: Get married. I was 27 when I got married, and I knew that I was old enough to set out on this journey rationally, instead of with my head in the clouds. Yeah, right. After 38 years, I’m happy to say that as scary as it was, getting married was also the best thing I’ve ever done.

Q: Who is the one person that has singlehandedly inspired you the most in your life?

Mallory: My daddy. He always told me that I could do anything I put my mind to. And he treated me as if I could do anything. He taught by example, excelling at everything he did in life, and he was always my biggest fan. When I published my first book, he told me that if he could write, he’d never do anything else.

Q: If you could take a trip to any foreign country RIGHT NOW, which one would you choose? Why?

Mallory: I had a remarkable opportunity this summer to visit the South of France. I would go back there in a heartbeat.

Q: What is one talent that you’re hopeless at, but you wish you had?

Mallory: Gardening. I can kill just about any plant with hardly any effort.

Q: What TV show are you most addicted to?

Mallory: My acceptable answer is Once Upon A Time. The guilty pleasure answer is America’s Next Top Model.

Q: If you were stuck on a deserted island, name three objects and three people you would want with you.

Mallory: Objects: my laptop, my kindle and my coffee pot. People: my husband, my best friend from New Orleans,  and my nephew.

Q: What is one trait or physical characteristic that you are proud of/love about yourself?

Mallory: I love my brain. I spend a lot of time inside it–writing, daydreaming, night-time dreaming. I enjoy my imagination and such intelligence as I have.  I appreciate my ability to take a snippet of conversation or of a TV show and grow it into a plot for a book.

Thank you so much for allowing me to answer these questions. They are really fun and imaginative. I had a great time.

I Have GREAT News …

After 6 months of querying and hair-pulling (if you’ve been through it, you know how it goes) I decided to trunk DESTINY GIFT. Some may think 6 months is too little, but I queried a lot and got tons of feedback.

See, DESTINY GIFT got several partial and full requests—I would say a 50% rate—but several only looked at it and said I should make it YA or Adult before trying to query again. That frustrated me. I wouldn’t back down from NA, nevertheless, I realized I should rewrite the whole first half of the thing to pick up the slow pace.

I had began the rewrites of DESTINY GIFT when I saw a pitch contest at Savvy Authors. I remember thinking “hey, what the hell, one more try” …

Fast forward a few  months (while I moved from Brazil back to the US and settled my life again and rewrote the first half of the ms): last Tuesday, I got an offer of publication, and now that it’s official, I can tell you …

Destiny Gift, my New Adult Paranormal Romance, will be published by Lyrical Press!

I’m delighted to be working with editor Abby Rose from Lyrical Press, who was the  judged of Savvy Authors’ pitch contest*. She understands my story and she wants to see it published as much as I do. We exchanged many emails and we even talked about the Destiny Gift’s sequels and she loves all my ideas! I’m really, really happy to have her on my side for this ride ;)

I can’t believe this is finally happening. I’m still on a dream and I’m afraid of waking up … guys, I’m so happy! This is my first step into the publishing world and oh, am I happy about it!

I want to thank my husband for giving me the sentence that became this whole book. True story. It was, basically, his idea. THANK YOU, LOVE! Thanks to my family who always supported me, to my friends and my lovelies CPs and my NA sisters and the whole writing community. You’re all amazing! And a special thanks to Abby Rose for believing in me, and Renee Rocco for welcoming me into their family!

Signing the papers!

So freaking excited! This is happening! Yay!

Want to know more about DESTINY GIFT? I have an under-development storyboard on Pinterest, I have an interview with my hero, the announcement of being the finalist of a contest, a pitch and the first 150 words used on another contest, and the query and the first 500 words which were used on yet another contest.

Thanks everyone!

Cheers,

*By the way, there are lots of pitches with agents and editors coming on Savvy Authors, you guys should check it out.

10 Things No One Knew About Blood Jewel

10 Things No One Knew About Blood Jewel

by Georgia Cates

  1. Blood Jewel is written from a male vampire’s POV, which is quite different from the ordinary human female love interest’s POV.
  2. The entire “scene” of Marsala reaching Curry through Black Magic in Club Infinity was inspired by the song “Sleep Alone” by Bat for Lashes.
  3. Chansey’s striptease scene was inspired by “Nasty Naughty Boy” by Christina Aguilera.
  4. Chapter 3 “Seekers, Swans and Dolls” opens up a whole new plot for Book 3, “Blood Doll.”
  5. Solomon’s character stepped up to the plate in “Blood Jewel”  because we will be seeing a lot more of him in the future.
  6. Although a Blood Jewel was discovered in Book 2, the explanation behind it won’t be revealed until Book 3, “Blood Doll” because of spoilers.
  7. The setting in Pascagoula is a place I frequently vacation to visit my favorite aunt.
  8. I have been to all of the settings in “Blood Jewel” with the exception of Savannah. I wanted to make a quick trip over so I could get a feel for it, but couldn’t find the time. That’s why there is little to no description about Savannah aside from being inside the compound.
  9. Very little in “Blood Jewel” is random. Most everything has a reason for being included and you might not realize that until you read “Blood Doll.”
  10.  Chansey’s grandmother plays a bigger role in this plot than the reader knows and the reader may be shocked to find out what Granna has been up to.

With the mystery of Chansey Leclaire and Curry Brennan’s connection solved, they are free to explore their newfound love for one another. Or so they thought…

When Marsala uses a witch and black magic to discover Curry’s whereabouts, he and Chansey are left with no choice. The newly engaged couple is forced to relocate away from their families at the new compound in Savannah, which causes some major changes in the plans for their upcoming wedding.

Relocating to Savannah might have saved Curry and Chansey from being discovered by Marsala, but it doesn’t stop her attempts to reach Curry or her efforts to harm Chansey through the use of black magic. As Marsala closes in, Curry faces the decision he never wanted to make. Will he keep Chansey human or condemn her to eternity as the thing he hates most?

As Curry waits for his hand to be forced, a newly turned vampire arrives at the Savannah compound in need of help. Not only is she a fledgeling in transition, she brings reports of escaping from a vampire cult still in possession of her sister, a human. Any attempt to save the captive human from a cult of vampires puts everyone in jeopardy. Can they risk entering a large cult to save one human being? And is so, how could they possibly do it successfully?

Love will grow. New mysteries will arise. A battle will ensue. A Blood Jewel will be found.

About the author: I reside in rural Mississippi with my wonderful husband, Jeff, and our two beautiful daughters.

I spent thirteen years as a labor and delivery nurse before I decided to pursue my dream of becoming an author.

Blood of Anteros, Book One in The Vampire Agápe Series, was my first novel and it was released in September 2011.

I decided to step away from the paranormal genre to try my hand at a young adult romance and I loved it. It was so much fun, I plan to do it again in the near future.

#ROW80 Last Checkin of Round 2

Hello friends!

Another round is over, can you believe that?

Here are my goals and how I did it:

  • Organize my new home and my new schedule. Done. In the beginning of this round I was moving from Brazil back to the US. It was a mess, but I think my life is settled again ;)
  • Once my life is normal again (or almost), find a gym and exercise 3 times per week. I kept up with it most of the time. I think only the last 3 weeks, I went to the gym twice instead of 3 times. Oops!
  • Participate on Crafting the Sensual Novella Workshop from April 9th to May 6th. Done.
  • Finish revising Re-revise my novel, DESTINY GIFT. DONE!
  • Start a new novel and get as far as I can with it. I wrote a novelette of 12,500 words, then started a novel and wrote 24,400 words into that.
  • In June, participate of the JuNoWriMo. I’m on it, but because of Destiny Gift revisions, I’m way behind. I have no hopes of catching up, but I’ll write everyday, like I always do ;) Unless more editing comes my way …
  • Read 5 books each month (year total = 60). On track.
  • Social network: blog at least once a week (not counting #ROW80 checkins), comment on blogs every other day, and tweet a little everyday. Done.

Unexpected revisions and editing of Destiny Gift took most of my time. You see, I rewrote the whole first half again (should have counted to add to the word count, right?). Then went back to the old one, and just tweaked a little to fit the story better. It was a mess and all over. But it’s done ;)

Unfortunately, that affected the writing of new stuff. But that’s okay. I’m okay with it. I think that’s the life of a writer, not only writing, but revising and editing A LOT too.

For the next round, I’ll do my goals differently. I saw people making weekly goals and announcing them on the previous check-in post. That’s probably what I’ll do.

Well, folks, this was a nice round! I hope to see everyone back on July 3rd for the 3rd round of the year!

Don’t forget to check-out the other ROWers!

Cheers,

Baby, You’re a Firework!

Hubby, daughter and I watched Madagascar 3 – Europe’s Most Wanted last Saturday.

SPOILERS OF THE MOVIE AHEAD!

Please, don’t laugh when I tell you two or three tears may have escaped my eyes when Katy Perry’s song Firework began during the magical circus performance scene. I always loved that song, the message it passes to us, and in that scene, where they have to do the impossible, it’s perfect!

And I imagined that song on a writing context, of course, because, well, the writing journey isn’t an easy one. There are days it seems near impossible.

In the movie, the animals lost the faith in what they do, and that was preventing them from being as great as they could be. Besides losing faith, they were scared of trying, they were scared of failing. Didn’t we all, as writers, feel like that at some point? Actually, at several points?

Alex and the gang help them recover that faith. Then comes the scene with Katy Perry’s song. It’s magical, it’s perfect, and it passes a message to us: we gotta believe in what we do, like the characters of the movie believed again in what they did. The circus was their lives, like writing is ours. They found out they couldn’t give up that easily. See why I became emotional with that scene and that song?

I know the four paragraphs above sound redundant, maybe only after seeing the movie you’ll understand what I mean. But again, if you’re a writer like me, you already do, don’t you?

BELIEVE IN THE IMPOSSIBLE!

Here’s the song’s official music video:

I hope I made your day a little better with this post ;)

Cheers,
